PSA: California Mattress Buyers Beware

Did you know that if you purchase a mattress online from Costco (or any other store for that matter) for delivery, they are required to haul away your old mattress for no additional charge?

From the Costco website: “Pursuant to California Law, effective January 1, 2021, pickup of a used mattress and box spring in California is available without any increase to the delivery charge with a delivered mattress. For questions regarding haul away or your recent delivery, please contact 1-800-955-2292 within 30 days of delivery.”

If the crew delivering your new mattress asks you for money to dispose of your old mattress (even if they say its “dirty”), you should refuse to pay it and remind them of the California law. If they still refuse, call the number to arrange for a free pickup.

You already paid a disposal fee when you purchased the mattress (it was built into the price).
